Your PK Lake Boat Rental Guide at The Cliffs Marina

Sep 7, 2026 | 0 comments

It’s nearly 11 a.m. out on the lake; the cooler is already half-empty, the sunscreen was forgotten in the center divider of the car, and everyone in the group chat stopped responding hours ago, because everyone is finally where they want to be: on lake time.

Let’s face it, a boat trip out on Possum Kingdom Lake rarely starts perfectly, but in a way, that’s part of the endearing nature of a quintessential lake day. Someone always walks off the boat burnt to a crisp, missing their favorite hat that blew off their head as they were racing around the lake, yet the smile permanently plastered across their face is priceless.

At The Cliffs Marina, we’re all about being the helping hand to get you off the docks and in the water as prepared (and as soon) as possible, so here, we’ll guide you through some important tips and tricks that every North Texas boater should know.

Boat Rentals For Your Possum Kingdom Lake Vacation: The options

No boat? No problem. At The Cliffs Marina, we have all the watercraft you’ll ever need; all you have to do is pick your date and time.

We provide 24-foot Berkshire Tritoon and Pontoon boat rentals that are built with laid-back lake days in mind. Pontoon rentals are available by the hour, and our prices vary by day, plus tax and fuel:

  • Weekday rate at $125 per hour
  • Weekend rate at $130 per hour
  • Holiday rate at $140 per hour

But if your version of an ideal lake day is all about thrill-seeking activities, we have personal watercraft available for rent. Weekday rates begin at $90 per hour while weekend rates are $110/hour, plus tax and fuel.

The marina also offers water toy rentals for guests looking to turn a simple lake stop into an all-day floating setup:

  • Half-day water toy rentals, starting at $25
  • Full-day water toy rentals, starting at $40

These are essential for swimming coves, floating hangouts, and group lake days.

No matter which rental you decide upon, everything at The Cliffs Marina is professionally maintained and serviced by our team before it ever hits the water. Instead of worrying about the logistics, all you have to worry about is when it’s time to head in and restock the cooler.

Do You Need a Boating License in Texas?

We know how it feels to be eager to jump behind the wheel and get out on the water, but it’s important to understand the Texas boating laws beforehand. Luckily, for many, the laws are pretty straightforward.

Here is the main thing you need to know: In Texas, anyone born on or after September 1st, 1993 is required to complete a TPWD-approved boater education course.

You will need to complete this course to legally operate:

  • A vessel with greater than 15 horsepower
  • A windblown vessel that is longer than 14 feet
  • Personal watercraft such as jet skis

All captains out on the water must carry a valid photo ID.

For all the younger lake pirates out there, Texas law requires anyone operating a personal watercraft or motorboat over 15 horsepower to be at least 13 years old and either:

  • Have successfully completed a boater education course, or
  • Supervision from anyone 18 years or older who can legally operate the vessel

New to the Lone Star State? Don’t worry. If visiting from another state, there is a good chance your existing boater education certification is accepted; Texas recognizes the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved courses from other states.

Here at The Cliffs Marina, we highly recommend you complete a boating safety course, even if you aren’t legally required to. Understanding all that comes with boating etiquette and safety is essential for creating a seamless, fun, and safe experience for everyone out on the water.

Do You Need a Fishing License on Possum Kingdom Lake?

PK Lake fishing

Possum Kingdom Lake is a favorite destination for North Texas anglers, especially for striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie fishing. If you plan to fish while out on the water, Texas law requires most visitors to carry a valid Texas fishing license while fishing in public waters. Fortunately, licenses can be purchased online in just a few minutes before your trip, including convenient one-day fishing license options for weekend visitors at PK Lake.

A few important things to know before casting a line:

  • Texas residents and non-residents both need a valid fishing license
  • Visitors under 17 years old are exempt from license requirements
  • One-day fishing licenses are available for short lake trips
  • All-water fishing packages are available for anglers planning multiple days on the water
  • Freshwater fishing endorsements are required for Possum Kingdom Lake

Whether you’re casually fishing from the back of a pontoon boat or spending the morning chasing striped bass across PK Lake, having your fishing license squared away beforehand helps keep your lake day smooth and stress-free.

Plan Your Day on Possum Kingdom Lake

At the end of the day, the best memories are the ones that last a lifetime, and at any VIP Marina you come across, this is the consistent mission. Your lake day should be filled with spontaneous adventures through the coves, lingering conversations while you float below the cliffs, and even the sunburn you (really) tried to avoid. Possum Kingdom Lake always has a way of turning ordinary weekends into lasting traditions.
