To the locals around Possum Kingdom Lake, many visuals come to mind when they think of Independence Day at Hell’s Gate.
As “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC blares from an anchored pontoon’s speakers across Possum Kingdom Lake, thousands of people swim, socialize, and party under the Texas sun waiting for the cool evening to arrive. Police slowly cruise through the crowd surveying the viewers for safety and the occasional rogue drunk cliff jumper. Then when one slips by the police, the unlawful daredevil leaps to glory from the infamous Hell’s Gate cliffs, hits the water with a big splash, and the crowd erupts into a roar of cheers louder than the fireworks they came to see.
The dazzling annual Independence Day Fireworks at Hell’s Gate on Possum Kingdom Lake is the setting of countless unforgettable moments throughout history.
Per usual, this year’s annual Hell’s Gate fireworks show will take place over Hell’s Gate and Devil’s Island. On Fourth of July weekend, visitors and boaters from across the entire country will post up around the natural fixtures to anchor, party, and celebrate the nation’s birthday while claiming the best views for the spectacular fireworks.

Firework safety tips for your Hell’s Gate Fourth of July
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that in 2023, fireworks caused eight deaths and around 9,700 injuries. Sixty-six percent of these firework-related injuries occurred during the weeks leading up to July Fourth that year.

“While it is a great American tradition to enjoy fireworks around the Fourth of July, it is important to remember that all fireworks, even sparklers, pose dangers to consumers. The safest way to view fireworks is to watch professional displays,” said CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric. “If you choose to light your own, make sure you only buy legal fireworks intended for consumer use from a reputable retailer.”
So, in case your party decides to bypass the public fireworks and mass crowds gathering at Hell’s Gate and Devil’s Island on Possum Kingdom Lake – save these firework precautions for later.
The Brazos River Authority recommends the following National Safety Council safety measures to take when lighting legal fireworks at home:
- Children should never handle fireworks
- Do not use fireworks under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Wear protective eyewear when launching fireworks or viewing them nearby
- Do not hold lit fireworks in your hands
- Never, under any circumstances, light fireworks inside
- Point lit fireworks away from flammable material, houses, and people
- Do not light fireworks in containers
- Avoid attempting to re-light malfunctioning fireworks
- Keep a bucket of water on standby to ensure malfunctioning or used fireworks are fully extinguished
- After extinguishing the fireworks, soak them in water for several hours before discarding
While lighting legal fireworks at home can make incredible unforgettable memories, they also present the opportunity to create unforgettable memories for the wrong reasons.
Just as important as firework safety is boating safety on Possum Kingdom Lake.
